V irginia S hepard B uck was born on the island of Key West, Florida. Her affinity for the sea and nature developed during her youth in southeastern Connecticut. She enjoyed swimming, boating, exploring hidden coves on the Thames River and caving in local woods. She helped her grandfather dig clams in Rhode Island, and gained a love and respect for the sea from her father, a naval officer.

She received ballet training in her early years, continued her love for dance at Juilliard, married and lived on Alfalfa Hill Farm, New Jersey, in the hills above the Delaware River. Although actively involved in dance, it was through an interest in gardening that she began to express her love of nature with pen and ink and watercolor wash. The farm was home to many pets, farm animals, crows, raccoons and wild critters. She later lived on Homestead Farm on the coast of Maine for many years and continues to vacation on Loud’s Island, a place of beauty, peace, and inspiration.

Virginia produced a ballet titled, A Blue Whale, illustrated children’s books, and has sold pictures privately and in galleries. Now, at the Old Buck Farm in Connecticut she continues to paint and write stories reflecting her love of nature—of vegetation, flowers, shells and aquatic life. Libraries in Connecticut have purchased the book collection.

The inspired paintings for the Fanseaful Fish Series are imaginative expressions based upon her love of all creatures and of the earth, an island in space. The twelve paintings of the series are the basis for Fanseaful Fish Tales that hopefully will kindle a spark of adventure and kindness among children of all ages.
